Selecting a Balanced Diet

Did You Know?

Different countries use different symbols for suggesting food intake. The United States has its food guide pyramid (replaced by MyPlate), but Canada uses a rainbow to show people what to eat, China and Korea use a pagoda- shaped guide, and Great Britain and Mexico symbolize their food intake guidelines using a plate.

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion is the branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that helps track, research, and promote healthy nutrition-related behavior and guidance materials for Americans. The Center produces and maintains two very important nutrition resources, the food guide pyramid (replaced by MyPlate) and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The U.S. Department of Agriculture manages a program that promotes healthy eating in schools called Team Nutrition. Team Nutrition supports innovations such as this website.
