Summer
Food Service Program 2004 Shining Stars
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s (HHSC) Special Nutrition Programs (SNP)
would like to thank you for your participation in the 2004 SFSP. Your participation is evidence
of your genuine concern for the wellbeing of the children in your community and you are to be commended.
According to calculations, the number of meals served during the 2004 participation year was 11,501,440.
That’s nearly one million more than the 10,772,605 meals served in 2003! Phenomenal job everyone! You made
the difference. Below are highlights of a few of the sponsors who made 2004 a wonderful summer for thousands
of Texas children. Join us in celebrating their success.
We are certain that there were many other sponsors out there who were just as creative and innovative in their
SFSP operations and we appreciate you all. We applaud all of your hard work in 2004 and look forward to even greater
reports in 2005. Continued expansion of the SFSP ensures that each year more eligible children will receive the nutritious
meals that they need. Thank you so much for your dedication and outstanding performance.

Greater Dallas Community of Churches
2800 Swiss Avenue
Dallas, Texas 75204
Greater Dallas Community of Churches has been a sponsor for three years. The SFSP director is Sonia White.
Greater Dallas has done an exceptional job managing their SFSP. Each year they have had to start with a new director,
but each year the program has gotten better. In their first year, PY 2002, they sponsored 20 sites. In PY 2003 they
increased to 53 sites. This past PY 2004, they sponsored 67 sites and were ready and willing to take on more! They
served approximately 166,000 meals. SNP was invited to a Recognition Social on September 29th hosted by Greater Dallas
Community, during which a recognition plaque was presented. There was also a representative from Half Price Books that
donated 3500 books to help with the reading program developed for children who participated in the SFSP! Ms. White has
now begun working with the HHSC SNP At-Risk After School program and is really working hard to make it a success.
Congratulations, Greater Dallas Community!
Channelview ISD
1403 Sheldon Road
Channelview, Texas 77530
SFSP Sponsors are encouraged to increase the number of days that they operate their SFSP so kids can benefit from
nutritious meals throughout the entire summer. Even though summer school ended July 3rd, Channelview took the initiative
to expand their SFSP by operating a non-school meal site through July 30—long after summer school had ended! Channelview
has been a SFSP sponsor since 1995. Congratulations, Channelview ISD!
